COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Commission approved funding Tuesday to install five more outdoor warning sirens.

The sites for the sirens have not been identified, said Chris Kelly, deputy director of emergency management for Boone County. The commission approved more than $172,000 to spend on the project during its regular meeting Tuesday, according to commission documents.

The county already maintains more than 90 warning sirens meant to alert people who are outside when severe weather approaches. The emergency management office plans to add five new sirens each year over the next three years.

Once locations are identified they will go through a vetting process that includes notifying people living near the sites and possible public hearings, according to a policy the commission approved in May.
