New website to promote government transparency
Missourians will soon be able to access data on government finances through a new website called ShowMeCheckbook.mo.gov.
“Prior to the launch of the new website, state financial data was often difficult to find and analyze,” according to a press release from State Treasurer Eric Schmitt’s office. “As a result, Missouri received a D+ grade for financial transparency from the Public Interest Research Group in April.”
The website will draw data from Missouri’s accounting system as well as state agency reports. According to Schmitt’s office, websites such as these can result in significant cost-savings for states that launch them. For instance, Texas saved an about $163 million as a result of a similar project, and North Carolina’s website led to a reform of state purchasing laws.
“Unfortunately in the past, (Missouri) has not provided adequate tools for accessing information about state finances,” Schmitt said. “Missourians have a right to see how their money is being spent and managed in Jefferson City and Show-Me Checkbook lets them do just that.”
