University of Missouri: Public’s help crucial in catching fondling suspect

University of Missouri police on Sunday arrested a man suspected of fondling a woman at a concert the night before on the Carnahan Quadrangle.

University police said the investigation began after they received a report around 10:15 p.m. Saturday.

The man suspected of fondling the woman was later identified as Alton Conner of Columbia.

Conner was booked into the Boone County Jail on one count of second-degree sexual abuse but released after posting a $500 bond, MU police said in a news release. The investigation is ongoing, police said. They declined to release more details.

ABC 17 News submitted an open records request with the University of Missouri System and was waiting to hear back Monday afternoon.

We’ve asked more than a dozen students about their feelings on the case. Most of them said they had no idea about the incident and the rest said they were pleased with how campus authorities handled the situation.

MU spokesman Christian Basi said the woman in the case approached MU police an hour after the incident and with the public’s help, police were able to find the suspect within 24 hours.

Jessica Caldera, assistant prosecuting attorney said the case is still under review and plans to make a decision prior to Conner’s bond return date of Sept. 13.
