Missouri experiencing severe and extreme drought

Rain showers are expected Sunday night, but it is not enough to get Missouri out of a severe to extreme drought.

According to ABC 17s Stormtrack Weather Team, 98 percent of Missouri is experiencing drought conditions.

Conditions could induce potential water restrictions and major crop and plant losses.

Plant expert and owner of Wilson’s Garden Center & Gift Shop Chuck Bay said watering plants right now is crucial for the longevity of the crops.

ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team said “the grass may not be dead, just dormant.”

Bay said he warns against applying any harsh chemicals or fertilizers to any plants or lawns.

“The plants are already stressed, adding more to the environment will stress them more,” Bay said.

He also said to make sure not to mow the lawn too much.

“The plants don’t have the moisture to grow,” Bay said.

According to our weather team, it will take 8 to 10 inches of rain to get out of the drought.

Bay said if we see a harsh fall, “it’s certainly going to take a toll on things.”
