Columbia police investigate burglary at Mizzou off-campus sorority house

UPDATE: Columbia police have released a description of the man who is suspected of entering the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority through an unlocked door.

He is a White or Hispanic man in his 20s to 30s with short dark hair. He has a tattoo on the back of his neck/upper shoulder area. He was last seen wearing a blue or purple t-shirt, blue jeans, white tennis shoes and a Kansas City Royals baseball cap.

The Columbia Police Department and MU Police offer the following burglary prevention and safety tips:

Ensure that all doors and windows remain locked. Secure sliding doors by placing a metal bar or wood dowel rod in the track and install vertical bolt locks. Always lock doors to attached structures such as garages. If you see something suspicious, say something. Call law enforcement by dialing 9-1-1 for emergency events or 3-1-1 for non-emergency events. ORIGINAL STORY: The Missouri University Police Department sent an alert Saturday morning, warning students that an off-campus sorority has been burglarized.

MU police said the Columbia Police Department is investigating the incident.

Police said the incident happened just before 4 a.m., when a man entered the house on Richmond Avenue through an unlocked door. He was confronted by several sorority members and was escorted out. Witnesses said they think the man headed west after leaving the house.

Columbia and MU police searched the area but couldn’t find the suspect.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s or 30s with a goatee, short hair and a tattoo on the back of his neck. He was last seen wearing a blue or purple shirt, a Royals baseball cap, white sneakers and blue jeans.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
