Driver falls asleep at the wheel, crashes on Highway 54

Jefferson City police responded to a crash on Highway 54 Westbound early Monday morning after a driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

It happened just before 5:30 a.m. at the High Street Overpass.

Richard Akin crashed into the center barrier of the highway just north of the tri-level, according to Jefferson City Police.

Crews shut down traffic leading to Highway 50/63 for about 45 minutes and shut down one lane of Highway 54 Westbound for about an hour.

First responders took Akin to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
