Doctors focus on prevention, education while providing free physicals

The Missouri Orthopedic Institute provided free physicals Thursday as students get ready to head back to school.

Most of the students were getting a pre-participation physical so they can participate in student athletics.

Physicians, optometrists, physical therapists and sports trainers tested hand-eye coordination, vision, speed agility and more.

Doctors said it was also a great opportunity to educate students on heat exhaustion and drinking enough water.

“We really encourage our athletes to stay hydrated before and after practice. Sometimes heat illness can come on quick especially when it’s as hot as it has been outside.” Aaron Gray, M.D. told ABC 17 News.

The event was free and did not require insurance.

“I think the cost benefit to society as a whole by recognizing these problems and dealing with them before they become very serious is very beneficial,” Seth Sherman, M.D. said.

This marks the fifth year MU health has held the event.
