Tens of thousands expected to attend Salute to America

Salute to America organizers are anticipating as many as 30,000 people to visit downtown Jefferson City through Wednesday night, despite hot temperatures.

A heat advisory was issued for several parts of Mid-Missouri including Jefferson City. It’s expected to expire at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The city’s police and fire departments will be organized to cover the area, which stretches from Broadway to Monroe Street and from High Street up to the river. According to festival organizers, the area spans about 13 blocks.

Lt. Deric Heislen with the Jefferson City Police Department said they will have adequate officers if there are any security issues.

According to Fire Division Chief Jason Turner with the Jefferson City Fire Department, all of the carnival rides have been inspected. Turner also said it’s important for everyone to stay hydrated and remember that fire workers are illegal in the city limits, including sparkers.

“The risk is just not worth it. That’s why we want to encourage everyone to leave it to the professionals,” Turner said.
