Jefferson City Building Official: No known cause of partial building collapse

Officials have not pinned down what caused part of a building to collapse onto Madison St. in Jefferson City Thursday morning.

Larry Burkhardt, a building official with the Jefferson City Department of Planning and Protective Services, said the last time the building was worked on was in 2013, when the second floor was renovated. It’s possible that’s where the collapse originated in the building.

“The failure seemed to occur at the second floor level,” Burkhardt said.

He also said engineers only had a brief time to analyze the scene, as the fire department wanted everyone out of the building in case of additional collapse.

The one-hundred-year-old building has been vacated, and the section of Madison St. where it occurred is closed until Friday morning, according to Britt Smith of the Jefferson City Public Works Department.

ABC 17 News has requested all recent inspections of the building by the city building regulation department and the fire department. This page will be updated when those documents are produced.
