City to hold last public hearing for Rollins Road speed tables, wants to move forward

The Rollins Road Traffic Calming Project is aimed to slow down drivers on Rollins Road between Sunset Drive and Stadium Boulevard.

It would install three speed tables along Rollins Road at Rockcreek Drive, Manor Drive and Ridge Road. It would also move the bulb-out and crosswalk from the east to the west side of Russell Boulevard.

The public can comment on this construction project at Monday night’s city council meeting.

The project is estimated to cost $65,000. The city says the money comes from Annual Traffic Calming Funds.

A breakdown of the cost is as follows, according to the city:

The three speed tables cost a total of $24,000. Curb ramps, bulb-outs, cross walk signs and markings cost a total of $41,000.

Kevin Chavez lives on the corner of Rollins Road and said he moved because of the speeding cars.

He said, “I moved across the road to have the fenced in backyard so my kids can play in a safe area without having to run in the road and get hit by cars.”

Chavez hopes speed humps will help ease the speeding drivers, but wants something more done for the neighborhood.

“During the school season I would say have cops monitoring it.” Chavez said. “There’s a lot of kids that ride their bikes and skateboards to school when it’s nice out.”

The city anticipates it will have to replace the speed tables and speed humps every 15 years.

The speed limit on Rollins Road is 25 miles per hour. But, the city said the average speed on the street is 38.66 miles per hour and has more than 1,350 vehicles traveling on it per day.

“Cars drive super fast and sometimes they can lose control of it,” he said.

Chavez said he wished drivers would be more courteous of th just wish they would be more courteous of the kids and try to protect our little loved ones.”
