Spring break is a prime time for break-ins

Burglary is a crime that is most likely to affect you – in Boone County alone it strikes twice a day on average. There have already been 70 reported this year.

ABC 17 asked a freshman at Mizzou if he is concerned about a possible break-in. “I’m not worried about break-ins,” he said.

He says he feels safe because his dorm has a key-card and the door locks automatically. But, other dormitories do not have this technology making a quiet campus a perfect place for crooks.

We spoke to Tech Electronics Office Director, John Pile, who told us how to keep your property safe when you are leaving town for spring break.

“You can buy little stick-up WiFi cams, if somebody comes into your apartment and they see that, their immediately going to leave, and hopefully they didn’t get caught on camera,” he said.

Other safety and security reminders are to clean out your car, so there is nothing to entice a break-in. Also, it is important to double-check your car, home doors, and windows are locked.

Put a bar lock on your sliding glass doors and windows.

It is best not to post on Facebook or Instagram. If someone sees you are away from your home, it could make you an easy target.

Pile also says it a good idea to look into a security system for your apartment or home. He says that it can make a big difference.

“Cheaper isn’t always better when it comes to systems, cheaper isn’t always better when you’re picking a place to live,” he said.
