Missouri lawmakers respond to Gov. Greitens indictment

Missouri lawmakers have come forward with statements following the Gov. Greitens indictment.

Gov. Greitens was indicted on Thursday on a felony charge of invasion of privacy.

See lawmakers’ responses below:

House Minority Leader Gail McCann Beatty – “It will be extremely difficult for the governor to effectively do his job with a felony indictment hanging over his head. While the criminal justice system must run its course, the governor needs to consider whether remaining in office under these circumstances is the right thing to do for not only himself and his family but for the people of Missouri.”

We have a budget that needs to be completed and citizens depending on us. We can’t do that with our state’s executive in jail. Through it all, the Republican Establishment has stood by him. Change can’t come soon enough. &#lt;a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/MOGov?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”&#gt;#MOGov&#lt;/a&#gt; &#lt;a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/MOLeg?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”&#gt;#MOLeg&#lt;/a&#gt; &#lt;a href=”https://t.co/tmc3LleuKF”&#gt;pic.twitter.com/tmc3LleuKF&#lt;/a&#gt;&#lt;/p&#gt;– Stephen Webber (@s_webber) &#lt;a href=”https://twitter.com/s_webber/status/966808092854898688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”&#gt;February 22, 2018&#lt;/a&#gt;&#lt;/blockquote&#gt;n&#lt;script async src=”https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″&#gt;&#lt;/script&#gt;n”,”width”:550,”height”:null,”type”:”rich”,”cache_age”:”3153600000″,”provider_name”:”Twitter”,”provider_url”:”https://twitter.com”,”version”:”1.0″}

Marc Powers, spokesperson for House Minority Leader Gail McCann Beatty – “Haven’t had the chance to discuss [impeachment] with her [House Minority Leader Beatty]; this took everyone by surprise. But the legislature needs to be extremely careful to avoid doing anything to interfere with the criminal investigation. As a result, right now discussion of impeachment remains premature. However, that is always subject to change as the situation evolves.”

Senator Jamilah Nasheed – “Gov. Greitens has to go. Missourians thought they voted for a person of character and integrity, and instead they got a liar and alleged criminal. I am calling on the Honorable Speaker of the House Todd Richardson to immediately begin the impeachment proceedings so that the people of Missouri can move forward.”

Democratic Governors Association – “The charges against Eric Greitens are deeply disturbing and prove he is unfit to hold public office. Following today’s indictment, Governor Greitens should step down immediately. The people of Missouri deserve a governor who can focus full-time on the issues affecting the state. The Republican Governors Association should send a clear message that it does not condone Governor Greitens’ illegal actions. The RGA should immediately remove Governor Greitens from its executive council.”

Speaker of the House Todd Richardson, Speaker Pro Tem Elijah Haahr, and Majority Floor Leader Rob Vescovo – “We will carefully examine the facts contained in the indictment and answer the question as to whether or not the governor can lead our state while a felony case moves forward. The people of Missouri deserve no less. We will begin the process of tasking a group of legislators to investigate these serious charges.”
