Three-year capitol renovation

Jefferson Public Works and the Planning Committee met today to discuss the three-year renovation of the Capitol that will lead to road closures.

The renovation will begin next week on March 2. The city hopes to have the project finished by the next general election in 2020.

ABC 17 asked a baker inside the Capitol if she was worried about business. Owner of Chez Monet, Joan Fairfax told us “I think if people want to come here they will. I think this won’t affect us much. This is the Capitol. People will come, people will be here.”

The nearby school, St. Peter’s, told us they are working with the city to come up with a plan to work together during this renovation.

The remodel consists of removing all the facing stone and then reinstalling it due to water damage.

If you are headed east bound, you will not be able to take West Main Street to Capitol Avenue.

The Jefferson City engineer, David Bange told us, “we’re probably going to need to ask folks for patience, you know, as we work through these things.”

The city plans to put signs on the off-ramps to warn people of the road closure. These signs will have alternative routes as well.

Jefferson city is also looking at renovation to sidewalks and high street, which will start at the front of the Capitol through downtown, exacerbating congestion and traffic.
