Columbia man charged with assault, burglary after being shot

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Prosecutors have charged a Columbia man with burglary and domestic assault after an incident in which he was shot at a west Columbia home.

Justin W. Owen, 36, was charged Wednesday with first-degree burglary and fourth-degree domestic assault. Police arrested him early Wednesday after a call of an assault with a weapon on Clinkscales Road.

Owen, who was drunk at the time, was asked to leave the house and was shot when he didn't, according to a probable cause statement. The statement says Owen's uncle lives at the house. A person at the house said Owen assaulted him to get inside after being told multiple times that he could not come in, according to the statement.

Owen told police that his mother gave him a ride to the house so he could sleep in the backyard, the statement says. He allegedly told police he was standing up and urinating outside when he was shot. Bullet holes at the scene indicated to investigators that Owen was inside the house when he was shot, according to the statement.

Owen was shot in the stomach area and police said he was released after treatment.

Owen remained in jail Thursday on a $100,000 cash-only bond. He did not have a lawyer listed in online court records.
