Trains halted after firefighters respond to railroad tracks for reports of smoldering coal

Jefferson City firefighters responded the railroad tracks at the end of Chestnut Street for reports of a rail car that was hauling smoldering coal.

Firefighters said they used 8000 gallons of water to put out the smoldering coal.

Fire units were on scene for approximately three hours.

Union Pacific was also on scene to make sure no other trains came through the area while firefighters were working near the tracks.
