Dangerously Cold For New Year’s Weekend
TONIGHT: Temperatures will dip close to or below zero for most of the region overnight, with the colder temperatures focused to our farther northern counties. A north wind at 10-15mph will produce bitterly cold wind chills near -15 degrees – any outside activity requires extra layers to protect any exposed skin. With these temperatures & wind chills, exposed skin will become frostbitten after 25-30 minutes of exposure. A wind chill advisory begins at 6pm this evening, and will last all the way into Tuesday morning.
New Year’s Eve Day: Temperatures will remain in the single digits into your New Year’s Eve Day with wind chills near -15. Extra layers will be needed out the door for any New Year’s Festivities.
New Year’s Eve Night: A wind chill warning will begin at 6pm tomorrow night, with wind chills dipping to near -25 degrees. Frostbite occurs in as little as 10 minutes on exposed skin with those types of wind chills. It is highly advised that any celebration remains inside as you bring in the New Year. Actual low temperatures will be near -6 degrees.
EXTENDED: Temperatures will remain bitterly cold New Year’s Day into the middle of the week, as we watch another cold front come through the area Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Frontal passage looks to remain dry, but will dip us back into the low 20s for day time highs on Thursday. However, there is somewhat of a light at the end of the tunnel with temperatures finally nearing the freezing point headed into next weekend.
