Bitterly cold air & light snow this week
We will have a very cold week with even colder air moving in by the New Year. Arctic air is on the move and heading south with the first round here for Tuesday and Wednesday and another heading in by the last weekend of 2017.
Winds aloft will come in from the northwest, sending fast moving waves of low pressure through Missouri which will give us light snow chances this week. The first chance comes late Monday night through Tuesday. Flurries overnight Monday will turn into light snow showers as the dry air saturates and snow is able to make it to the ground. On and off light snow showers are expected Tuesday morning before turning to flurries and ending in the afternoon. Minor accumulation is possible with most areas seeing under a half inch. A few spots could pick up an inch, due to the fluffy nature of the snow.
Tuesday night will be the coldest yet this season as we drop into the single digits north of I-70 to the lower teens in the Ozarks. A light north breeze will generate wind chills as low as 10 below zero north to near 0 south by early Wednesday morning. It won’t improve much during the afternoon as wind chills will stay in the single digits. Daytime highs will only reach the teens again Wednesday.
There is another chance of light snow Thursday afternoon but it looks like it will stay mainly north of I-70 and amounts will be very light, only a dusting at best. We’ll warm up slightly by Friday but will still be below freezing before the next surge of arctic air moves in for next weekend. A light snow chance returns Saturday afternoon and night as temperatures plunge into the single digits.
