Columbia City Council to hear public comments about proposed Ballenger Lane road improvements

Columbia residents will have another chance to speak about a possible safety improvement project for a northeast Columbia road during the city council meeting Monday night.

The project would improve Ballenger Lane from Ria Street to Mexico Gravel Road.

According city documents, the proposed project includes widening both sides of the road by 6 feet, connecting the existing subdivision sidewalks to the proposed road shoulders, reconstructing 18 driveways, slightly realigning the road, storm water improvements and restriping the road.

Columbia Public Works crews said the project will improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, who currently have to bike or walk in the grass or street.

Some residents have already sent the city their comments about the project. They said the improvements are needed.

City staff said the project is estimated to cost $2.2 million. The Missouri Department of Transportation will contribute $1.8 million, meaning the city is expected to pay $400,000.
