Police investigating shooting in west Columbia neighborhood

UPDATE (11:30 P.M.): Columbia police said an armed home invasion turned into a shooting that sent one man to the hospital with serious injuries Sunday night.

Police said at least two armed suspects forced their way into a home in the 200 block of Loch Lane and demanded money. Multiple gunshots were fired, according to police.

The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.

ORIGINAL: Police have blocked off parts of two streets in a neighborhood near Stadium Boulevard and West Broadway after a man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Columbia police officers have set up crime scene tape on Loch Lane and Braemore Road.

A lieutenant with the Columbia Police Department said it appeared a man was shot in the head, but was conscious and alert when officer arrived on scene. He was taken to the hospital.

The officer said the department’s Criminal Investigation Unit has taken over the scene as investigators continue to look for evidence. The lieutenant said it’s unclear at this time what prompted the shooting.

The online emergency dispatch system shows the Columbia Fire Department and University Hospital Ambulance were called to the 200 block of Loch Lane around 8:30 p.m.for a medical response.
