UPDATE: Columbia woman dead after Monday’s early morning car crash, police say

UPDATE 3:08 pm: According to a spokesperson for the University of Missouri, Burks is in critical condition.

ORIGINAL STORY: One person has died as a result of a car crash that happened early Monday on I-70 Drive Southeast, Columbia police said.

The crash happened in the 4600 block of I-70 Drive Southeast just before 1 a.m.

Police said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene before first responders arrived.

One person had to be extricated from the passenger side of the truck, and two people were taken to the hospital, police said.

Cathy Watson, 58, of Columbia, the passenger who had to be extricated, was not wearing a seat belt, and later died at the hospital, police said.

Randy Burks, 51, of Columbia, was riding in the bed of the truck at the time of the crash, and suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said the crash is still under investigation.
