Man charged in connection with Pettis County officer-involved shooting

John Brandkamp has been charged with assault of a law enforcement officer after deputies responded to the 28000 block of Highway U for a report of a possible suicidal subject

According to the probable cause statement, officers observed Brandkamp standing in the door way of his residence with a rifle.

Deputies said Brandkamp fired one round towards the officers then retreated back into the house. A short time later, Brandkamp stepped back outside holding another gun and fired two shots again towards the officers, deputies said.

One officer was returned fire striking Brandkamp in the leg and shoulder, deputies said.

One witness told officers that Brandkamp was not himself and wanted the officers to shoot him.

Sergeant Tolbert Rowe said based on the examination of the scene, the front porch and the driveway, he determined that Brandkamp shot toward the direction of the officers.

Rowe said officers on scene were in fear of their immediate safety and the situation posed a substantial risk of death and/or serious physical injury.

Rowe said the officer who shot Brandkamp did so to protect himself.
