Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates hires second assistant

Cleveland State Athletics

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou men's basketball coach Dennis Gates made his second hire official on Thursday morning. David "Dickey" Nutt will join Mizzou's staff, bringing more than 30 years of experience to the sidelines.

The hire comes just about a week after Gates made his inaugural hire in associate head coach Charlton Young.

"David "Dickey" Nutt is a true veteran in this profession with an immense amount of passion for the game as well as for student-athlete development," Gates said in a press release. "We are lucky to have someone with his level of experience on our staff. Coach Nutt has a wealth of basketball knowledge and recruiting relationships in our state which will be a tremendous asset to our program, our Athletic Department, our University and CoMo."

Most recently, Nutt served as the head coach and athletics director at Gaston College for one school year, but before that he worked alongside Gates as a special assistant coach at Cleveland State. He's previously served as the head coach at Arkansas State from 1995-2008, where he led the group to two Sun Belt Championships and the program's only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999.

Nutt and Gates actually first worked together at Florida State from 2015-2018, where Nutt was a video coordinator under head coach Leonard Hamilton. Through his final season in Florida, the Seminoles made it to the Elie Eight.

Over the course of his career, Nutt has also made stops at Stetson, Southeast Missouri State, and Oklahoma State.

"I feel so fortunate and honored to be a part of Coach Gates' staff here at the University of Missouri," Nutt said. "I've seen firsthand his work ethic, his love for young people, game preparation and his masterful recruiting ability. I am excited to be reunited with him and eager to go to work in building a championship program – on and off the court."
