Hawley announces conviction of a man accused of killing a county commissioner
Attorney General Josh Hawley announced on Friday that a jury found Michael Hays, 30, guilty of involuntary manslaughter, assault in the second degree and failing to keep right on a roadway.
Hays was accused of killing Bate County Commissioner Larry Berry in 2014.
Hawley said the jury heard evidence that Hays admitted to drinking 10 alcoholic drinks before getting behind the wheel of his car.
Hays was accused of crossing the center lane of Route A just outside of Hume, Missouri, and driving his truck into the driver’s side of Berry’s vehicle.
Hawley said the crash also injured Berry’s 20-year-old son.
“Our office will prosecute those who harm the innocent,” Hawley said. “Mr. Hays’ actions were indefensible. I hope the family of the victims can find some solace in this conviction.”
Hays faces up to life plus 17 years in prison.
