Illinois man charged with sexual assault of a learning-disabled adult in Mexico

MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

An Audrain County prosecutor has charged an Illinois man after he allegedly sexually assaulted a 32-year-old woman that is learning disabled.

Tobias Olavarri is charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.

According to court documents, the victim told police she was at the Jodie Coin Laundry on the 600 block of East Liberty Street in Mexico on Sept. 25, 2021, when Olavarri approached her in the bathroom and sexually assaulted her.

Police report reviewing video footage from the laundry and saw the victim and Olavarri were in the bathroom for around 30 minutes, according to the probable cause statement.

According to the Social Security Administration and the victim’s lawyer, the victim receives disability benefits for borderline intellectual functioning and learning disabilities. The victim is described as a 32-year-old but has the mind of a child.

Online court records do not list a defense attorney for Olavarri.
