Driver charged with felony murder booked in Boone County Jail

Brandon Brill, 26, who is charged with second-degree felony murder after a deadly car crash the killed a Harrisburg teacher, has been booked into the Boone County Jail.

Boone County Sheriffs arrested Brill Wednesday morning without incident at his mother’s house outside Clark around 9:30 a.m., according to Detective Tom O’ Sullivan. However, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is the leading agency in this investigation.

Brill, who was driving a truck in Thursday’s crash, suffered serious injuries and was treated at University Hospital, but it is unclear when he was released. Sgt. Scott White with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says it’s possible he was released “a couple days ago.”

Capt. Keith Hoskins, detention director at the Boone County Jail, says that individuals charged with a crime will be supervised if they are in custody of the detention staff. He says that is the policy of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, and not necessarily the policy for other agencies.

Hoskins says the Boone County Sheriff’s Department may have deputies stay in the room to supervise a suspect in case they are being treated in a hospital, but that is decided by the court.

“Occasionally, the courts will release them from our custody in order to seek treatment,” Hoskins said. “Then the individual has to return to our custody once the treatment is provided.”

If no agency has custody of the individual, which was true for Brill, then they can leave the hospital without immediately being taken into custody by authorities.

“Usually, the courts will be notified either through the individual’s failure to show for their next court appearance,” Hoskins said. “Or, they might be notified due to the fact that the individual had left custody and got rearrested on a different charge.”

According to the Boone County Jail website, Brill has a court date scheduled for Thursday.

Brill is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.
