Soggy week ahead for Mid-Missouri

After a very dry start to the fall season, Mid-Missouri is finally gearing up for what will be a soggy week.

Lately we have been under the influence of a ridge in the eastern half of the country. While the heart of the ridge is to the northeast, here in Mid-Missouri we are on the periphery of the ridge. This will allow some showers and storms to begin to develop through the day on Tuesday afternoon. This typically occurs in the formation of a “dirty ridge”, as upper-level disturbances round the periphery of ridges.

While scattered showers and storms are possible, we won’t see the true super soaker of the week until we head into Wednesday.

This rain will come on the heels of a cold front that will try to push through the region, but with the ridge still to our west the frontal boundary will struggle to make it past Mid-Missouri. This will set the stage for several days of rainfall that could bring a risk of flash flooding for parts of Mid-Missouri. Newest estimates have many areas seeing anywhere from 1-2 inches along and south of Highway 50, with 2-4 inches for areas along and north of Interstate 70. The latest drought monitor shows the dry conditions that have been expanding into Mid-Missouri. While we can spare a few inches, if the rain comes in heavily enough, we’ll see the threat for flash flooding.

Following the rain we’ll see a return to the 70s and overnight lows in the 50s. There’s also a hint of even cooler weather as we head beyond this upcoming weekend, but that comes following the soggy week ahead.
