An abnormally dry September, but rain is in the forecast

For the month of September, we have seen drastic temperature swings, along with abnormally dry conditions. On average, from the 1st to the 13th of September, Columbia receives 1.56″ of rain. Within the past 13 days Columbia Regional Airport has not picked any rainfall, indicating we are well below average for the month of September. However, for 2017, Columbia is right on track for average annual rainfall. Typically, from January 1st to mid-September Columbia receives 31.31″ of rain. This year Columbia has received 31.11″, only 0.2″ less than normal.

This dry weather pattern looks to continue here in mid-Missouri, but changes are in the forecast. Through the rest of the work week we can expect dry, hot, and muggy conditions, but as we close the weekend, rain is in the forecast. A passing cold front will bring storm chances late Saturday into Sunday. This will begin a stretch of fairly active weather as we head into next week.

In addition the active weather pattern for next week, the Climate Prediction Center forecasts for above average rainfall totals as we head into the second part of the month. From September 20-26, mid-Missouri will likely see higher rainfall totals than normal, which could help overcome this month’s rain deficit.

Luckily, since we have been on track for average rainfall throughout the entire year, the US Drought Monitor indicates no abnormally dry conditions here in mid-Missouri. This could change with the next update, but the rain we receive in the next 7 days and into the second part of this month could help us stay out of any drought like conditions.

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team will continue to track mid-Missouri’s changing rain chances, keeping you updated on air and online.
