Domestic assault, car theft suspect arrested

Columbia police responded to the 100 block of Ripley Street Monday morning after receiving a disturbance call.

Officers say they made contact with a victim who claimed 33-year-old Cody Wright had beaten and threatened her on several occasions including that day.

“The investigation revealed that Wright smacked the female victim twice and held her to the ground by pressing her down very hard with his knee on her chest,” said a department spokesperson. “While the victim was on the ground, Wright choked her with both hands, bit her, and pulled her eats very hard. The victim reported while she was still on the ground he grabbed her face very hard and threatened to kill her and her dog.”

The victim told police Wright also attacked her Saturday and Sunday as well.

“Officers observed that the victim had bruises on her right arm, her face and neck, both of her legs, and the left side of her lower back,” said the spokesperson. “Officers also observed the victim had redness around her neck and her nose looked crooked like it may be broken.”

When police followed Wright into the house, officers say he climbed through a bathroom window and onto the roof, where they say he was trying to find an escape route.

Wright eventually came back into the bathroom, where he was arrested.

Police say Wright did not go quietly, repeatedly “throwing himself to the ground” and refusing to stand up.

Wright is facing charges of second-degree domestic assault, resisting or interfering with an arrest.

The department said Wright was wanted for failure to appear with a cash-only bond of $5,000.00, and had an active warrant for a stolen vehicle with a cash-only bond of $100,000.00.
