Multiple organizations to hold vigils for Missouri death row inmate

The execution of Marcellus Williams, a 48-year-old man convicted of murder, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In response, the local chapters of several organizations plan to hold gatherings to oppose the sentence.

The Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (MADP) and other allied groups will hold “Vigils for Life,” Tuesday, the first beginning at noon outside the office of Gov. Greitens at the Capitol in Jefferson City.

The group said in a press release that a representative will deliver petitions to the governor signed via Change.org by over 180,000 people.

Another gathering is scheduled for 5 p.m. in front of the Boone County Courthouse.

“Missouri again stands at a grotesque moral treshold as officials prepare to execute Marcellus Williams,” said Jeff Stack, coordinator of the Mid-MO FOR. “He would be the 89th person executed since 1989, making our state by far the most gruesome mass murderer in Missouri history. Will state officials kill him, even as massive doubt of his guilt clouds this case?”
