Two indicted in string of armed robberies around Mid-Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A federal grand jury indicted a Columbia man and Moberly woman Wednesday with charges that they conspired to rob four businesses and two banks in six cities.
Drake A. Stockton-Kenney, 30, and Mary C. Sumpter, 28, were indicted on eight counts. The indictment was unsealed Friday after Sumpter's arrest, according to a release from the U.S. attorney's office.
The indictment alleges Stockton-Kenney and Sumpter stole more than $3,300 from Check into Cash in Moberly on April 17, 2021; nearly $300 from World Finance in Mexico, Missouri, on May 4, 2021; nearly $700 from Advance America in Marshall on May 6, 2021; $200 from Check 'n Go in Hannibal on May 20, 2021; nearly $8,700 from Alliant Bank in Pilot Grove on June 2, 2021; and more than $22,000 from Alliant Bank in Boonville on June 25, 2021.
The indictment says Stockton-Kenney pointed a gun at employees during the robberies and used physical restraints on employees of World Finance and Check 'n Go, according to the news release. The two are also charged with a count of business robbery and two counts of bank robbery. Some of the incidents occurred outside of Missouri's Western District, where the charges were filed.
Stockton-Kenney is also charged with three counts of using a gun during a violent crime and one count of being a felon with a gun. Columbia police took a Taurus 9mm pistol from his home when he was arrested on Aug. 10, 2021, on unrelated state charges, according to the release.
Stockton-Kenney has two convictions for burglary and convictions for vehicle theft and robbery.
His Aug. 10 arrest occurred after a domestic assault call, police said at the time. A SWAT team and crisis negotiator were used to get Stockton-Kenney out of his home. He's charged with several felonies in that case, including domestic assault, kidnapping and unlawful use of a weapon. Stockton-Kenney is also charged with damaging jail property in a separate case.
