Columbia using different methods to prevent copper thefts

The city of Columbia is trying a number of different tactics to prevent copper thefts following a pattern over the past few months.

We first told you about thefts in May, when police found copper stolen from Cosmo Park, Stephens Lake Park and Nickell Golf Course. Columbia Parks and Recreation officials said thefts started happening every few weeks. Each resulted in a small amount of copper being stolen, costing the city thousands of dollars total.

Parks and Recreation officials told ABC 17 they’re looking at using cheaper metals like tin and aluminum that are easier to replace.

The city also said police are regularly patrolling Cosmo Park and Nickell Golf Course to prevent future incidents.
