Attempted traffic stop ends in crash in central Columbia

An investigation is underway after an attempted traffic stop by police ends in a crash in central Columbia late Thursday night.

Police told ABC 17 News at the scene that officers tried to stop a vehicle on Ammonette Street near Old Highway 63. The suspect tried to drive away before their vehicle hit a support cable leading from a power pole. It caused the pole to be split in two.

Police said after the vehicle became caught on the wire, the suspect tried to run from officers. The suspect was arrested by police on Ammonette.

According to officers at the scene, no one was hurt in the crash.

Police have not released the suspect’s name, what initiated the traffic stop or what charges the suspect could face.
