Judge sentences Columbia man for deadly 2019 shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Boone County judge has sentenced a Columbia man for a deadly 2019 shooting.

Garland Wisley, 63, was sentenced on March 2 to 20 years in prison for the shooting death of 38-year-old John Albers. The judge sentenced Wisley to 15 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, the judge also sentenced Wisley to five years in prison for armed criminal action.

Prosecutors had charged Wisley with second-degree murder in Albers' death. Investigators said he shot and killed Albers on Sarazen Drive in east Columbia on Jan. 13, 2019.

Witnesses reportedly told investigators Albers tried to stop an argument between Wisley and another person. Albers asked Wisley to hand over the gun before he was shot, according to court documents.

Police in Arizona arrested Wisley after he tried to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico in November 2019. Wisley was extradited to Boone County in December 2019.
