Severe storms possible into Thursday evening

TODAY: The afternoon brings a slight thunderstorm chance mainly north and along I-70. Areas south of I-70 will stay dry until evening. It will be a hot and humid afternoon with high temperatures in the upper 80s to 90 and heat indices reaching the mid 90s. Southerly winds of 8-15 mph will gust to 20 mph at times. By the evening hours storms chances are expected to increase with temperatures dropping into the low 70s. Our northwest counties will see the greatest chance of storms to arrive after 7 PM. For tonight, there is a Slight Risk for severe weather in Mid-Missouri. The primary threats are damaging winds with the potential for large hail. There is a very low chance for tornado, but it is not an obsolete risk, at a 2% chance for areas along I-70 and north of I-44. Storms are likely to track to the southeast through the overnight hours.

FRIDAY: Heading into Friday, any lingering showers or storms are looking to end by the afternoon. As the cold front slowly moves south of I-70 into the afternoon hours, additional storms will develop and gradually move southeast. Areas south of I-70 are under a slight risk for severe weather for Friday. Isolated severe storms containing damaging wind or large hail will be possible. Storms will move south of I-44 Friday evening with drier weather late Friday night and into the weekend. Highs will stay in the low to mid 80s Friday with lower humidity behind the cold front.

EXTENDED: This weekend looks dry until late-day Sunday with high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s but not as humid. However, as we head into next week the cold front lifts northward as a warm front, and sets the stage for another active start to the work week with an increasing chance of storms Sunday night into Monday and another chance of storms for the 4th of July. The humid weather returns Monday as high temperatures reach the mid-upper 80s. For additional weather updates follow us @ABC17Stormtrack on Twitter and like us on Facebook.
