Utility pole crash ignites power lines near Scott Blvd.

Emergency crews responded early Tuesday to the 5600 block of Scott Boulevard in Columbia for a report of a car crash.

Columbia police said no one in the car was injured after it collided with a utility pole around 1:30 a.m., causing the lines to catch fire for about 25 minutes.

Officers told ABC 17 News that the driver of the vehicle was heading north on his way home and fell asleep at the wheel.

“The pole he hit is a ‘major’ part of the circuit out here, so the crash caused several outages,” said Lt. Matt Stephens with Columbia police.

Columbia Water and Light listed 5 total outages affecting more than 1,200 customers.

Stephens said he expects repairs to take several hours and drivers are advised to avoid that area of Scott Boulevard while repairs are underway.

While one lane of traffic may be opened late Tuesday morning, crews told ABC 17 News that logistics are not yet set in stone.
