Kansas governor calls on education commissioner to resign

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Gov. Laura Kelly is calling on the top public school administrator in Kansas to resign following reports that he made an inappropriate remark during a recent conference. Kelly issued her statement Thursday about Education Commissioner Randy Watson after the State Board of Education scheduled a special meeting for Friday. The 10-member elected board appoints the commissioner to run the State Department of Education. Watson did not immediately respond to a request for an interview made through the department. He has been commissioner since November 2014. Board member Ann Mah told The Topeka Capital-Journal that Watson made what she called an inappropriate comment during a conference last week.
