August primary candidate filing opens Tuesday as U.S. congressional redistricting map is still undecided

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo (KMIZ)

Candidates can file paperwork for the August primary election Tuesday morning at the Missouri Secretary of State's Office in Jefferson City.

The candidate filings come as the Missouri Senate works to pick a map for the state's eight U.S. congressional districts. Missouri is required to redraw the map every 10 years to account for population growth or loss found during the Census.

Currently, the U.S. congressional map for Missouri has six republican and two democratic districts. Some Senate Republicans are pushing for a 7-1 map in favor of Republicans by splitting the Kansas City area into two districts.

Earlier this month, negotiations over the new congressional map were delayed by a filibuster in the Missouri Senate that lasted over 30 hours. At certain points, senators could be heard talking about barbecue, movies, tv shows, and even reciting song lyrics, including the Spice Girls, "Wannabe."

Last month, the Missouri House of Representatives sent a congressional map that kept the 6-2 count in favor of the republican party to the Missouri Senate.

As of Tuesday morning, there hasn't been a timeline outlined for the map to be brought back into the legislative session. The Missouri Senate plans to reconvene Tuesday at 2 p.m.
