Group sues St. Louis over police promotion procedures

KMIZ

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A police group that advocates for minority officers is suing St. Louis over its police promotion procedures. The Ethical Society of Police alleges in a lawsuit filed Wednesday that the city has maintained the same rank promotion list for more than four years. The lawsuit contends using the old promotion lists perpetuates racial inequality by not giving minority officers an opportunity to advance their careers. Under city civil service rules, lists for promotion are to expire after two years unless extended. The ESOP is asking that the city pause promotions to lieutenant and captain until testing can produce a new list of candidates.
