Columbia Planned Parenthood awaits licensing to continue abortions

Columbia’s Planned Parenthood could soon be providing abortions again.

On Tuesday, a federal judge’s ruling to lift abortion restrictions went into effect.

The ruling means Planned Parenthood just needs licensing from the state to resume abortion services at the Columbia facility on Providence Road. It’s something President and CEO Laura McQuade of Planned Parenthood Great Plains said the organization is “thrilled” about.

“(Planned Parenthood Great Plains) stands ready to receive licenses to begin providing abortion services at the Midtown KC and Columbia, Missouri health centers,” said McQuade.

In his ruling, Judge Howard Sachs wrote, “The Court expects current and future licensing applications to be processed promptly, in light of patient needs, and without effective influence from opponents of abortion.”

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley said he still plans to appeal the court’s decision.

“The order leaves in place other state safety regulations regarding abortion facilities, as well as the state’s licensing requirements,” said Hawley. “I am disappointed the court has struck down important safety measures that protect the health and well-being of those women who choose to undergo an abortion. I will appeal the court’s decision and order.”
