Hazmat team responds to Columbia Planned Parenthood

UPDATE: Columbia Fire Department crews have cleared the area, and the Planned Parenthood building is safe to re-enter.

The building was evacuated after an irritant in the air was reported. Planned Parenthood Vice President of Great Plains Kristin Metcalf-Wilson says they were told it was organic substance in the area.

Assistant Fire Chief Brad Frazier told ABC 17 News that four employees had an irritation to their eyes and had experienced some coughing. They refused medical treatment.

The irritation was coming from only one room and the area around the building were considered safe.

Columbia police are also investigating and working to find out if anything suspicious was involved.

ORIGINAL: A hazmat team is on scene at Planned Parenthood on Providence Road in Columbia.

ABC 17 crews at the scene saw emergency workers go inside of the building around 5:15 p.m.

One southbound lane is currently blocked.
