Snow potential as we head into February

Seasonal snowfall has been low in the past two winters after an average year in 2013-14 when we got just under our seasonal average of 18 inches. This year we will end January with only 1.5 inches of snow for the season so far. But as seen in past years, February and March can bring decent snow events.

Last year we only had a trace of snow at the end of January but picked up just under 7 inches in February and another 2 inches in March. And back in 2013 we ended up with 35 inches, 30.8 inches which came in February and March.

The 30 year average snow in February is 4.7″ which we exceeded in 5 of the last 7 years. So although we are halfway through winter, it’s still possible we could see some moderate snow events in the next few weeks.

As of now, no accumulating snow is expected through the end of January in Mid-Missouri. Forecast models are hinting at possible wintry precipitation for the weekend of February 4-5. However, it’s still 10 days out and just something we are keeping an eye on for now.
