Man charged with attempted assault on an K-9 officer, resisting arrest

UPDATE: ABC 17 News obtained court documents Wednesday about the incident involving Jean Richard Innocent and a CPD K-9 officer.

According to the documents, police responded to the Aspen Heights neighborhood late Monday night. They say they saw Innocent yelling and acting violently.

One officer got out of his patrol car to make contact with Innocent and the officer reported Innocent started yelling and charging at him in a threatening manner. The officer told Innocent to get back but Innocent did not comply.

A second officer arrived on scene with his K-9 partner. The second officer also got out of his patrol car to help the first officer. The documents say with both officers out of their patrol cars, Innocent started to circle around them and their cars.

The documents say while Innocent was on the far side of the second officer’s car, the K-9 inside started barking. Innocent then started yelling at the K-9 and opened the back door. Document said the K-9 engaged Innocent and started to bite him.

Upon being bit, the documents say Innocent started to scream and started to hit the K-9 in the head and snout area with a closed fist.

The documents say Innocent continued to fight with the K-9 and the officers and resisted arrest, refusing to give officers his hands.

On Wednesday, Innocent was charged with a class E felony of attempted assault in the third degree for attempting to cause physical injury to the responding officer by charging at him. The officer is also considered a “special victim” as defined by state law. Innocent was also charged with a class E felony for resisting arrest when he “knew or reasonably should have known that the officers were making an arrest.”

Innocent is being held on a $25,000 cash only bond.
