Jefferson City man charged with attempted robbery at JC Mart

A Jefferson City man was charged for attempting to rob a gas station Saturday.

Witnesses told police the man came into the JC Mart on West Dunklin Street with a gun and demanded money.

Surveillance video revealed the man had covered his face with a plastic bag. After employees told him the money was in a safe, he started to demand cigarettes. He also stated, “I don’t wanna shoot anyone.”

The suspect fled the scene after another person entered the store.

On Sunday, police were searching an apartment for an unrelated case and found shoes matching the suspect’s shoes. Michael Baker, the man at the apartment, agreed to speak with police and went to the station for an interview. When he was getting ready to leave, he put on a coat matching the suspect’s coat in the video.

Baker then admitted he was intoxicated and attempted to rob the store. He said he borrowed the gun from a friend and fled because he was scared.

He said it felt like the gun was loaded, but he was not sure if it was.

Baker has been charged with attempted robbery.
