Man wanted for shooting at officers in Saline County killed in Columbia officer-involved shooting
UPDATE 4:56 p.m.: According to a MSHP press release, Bateman’s autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a single contact gunshot wound in the head. Based upon this autopsy and investigation, the wound was likely self-inflicted.
UPDATE 8:11am: The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed Thursday morning that the man killed in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday was 35-year-old Troy Bateman.
Bateman was wanted for an active warrant for burglary and for allegedly shooting at a trooper in Saline County on Friday.
Troopers say Columbia police officers tried to stop a black sedan on North Oakland Gravel Road Wednesday just before 2:30pm.
Once the vehicle stopped, two females apparently got out of the vehicle. Troopers say Bateman was inside the vehicle and fired one shot from inside the vehicle.
The Highway Patrol says two Columbia police officers then fired back and Bateman was found dead in the vehicle shortly after.
UPDATE 4:51 p.m.: The Missouri State Highway Patrol has confirmed one man is dead after a shooting on Oakland Gravel Road.
It happened during a traffic stop.
“Two females exited the vehicle and shots rang out from inside of the car,” said Sgt. Scott White with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. “Columbia police officers returned fire, and right now we can confirm there is a deceased male at the scene.”
The two women are being questioned and no officers were harmed.
ORIGINAL STORY: Law enforcement units from multiple agencies are on the scene at Oakland Gravel Road in Boone County.
A helicopter is flying overhead and crime scene tape has marked off a large area.
Columbia Police, Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers, and Boone County Sheriff’s Department are on scene. Some are dressed in heavy gear.
An ABC 17 News crew is also on the scene and has been told to stay back.
