Window shattered, bullet-like dent found days after police find no evidence of shooting

Less than two days after Columbia police were called to Newton Drive for reports of gunfire, a woman said she found her child’s bedroom window shattered from what appeared to be a bullet.

“We weren’t home at the time, but it gives the real reality of how close it came and how dangerous this street is,” said Tara Hunter. “I’m scared for my kids. I’m scared for everyone in this neighborhood, because I don’t know who’s doing it. I don’t know when it’s going to happen again.”

Officers were called to Newton Drive around 5:30 Wednesday morning. The department said responding officers cleared the scene without finding any evidence of a shooting.

Since June, CPD has been called to Newton Drive six different times for reports of shots heard.

Hunter said she had a hard time reaching a police officer Thursday afternoon to report the broken window.

“How am I supposed to feel safe if I cant get ahold of the people that are trying to keep me safe? It’s their job to make me feel safe.”

Hunter said she would like to see more of a police presence on her street. Meanwhile, she said she’s already looking for a new place to live.

“At least make it known that if somebody needs you, you’re there. If you hear shots fired, they can be there in a matter of seconds. I commend Columbia for what they have done, but now they just need to step it up a notch. Make me feel safe again.”
