Monday Afternoon, December 16

FRIDAY: A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for all of Mid-Missouri until 6 PM this evening. The advisory comes as freezing drizzle has been falling for most of the day. The freezing drizzle will be patchy in spots and not widespread, but it’s likely to cause some road concerns. As the freezing drizzle tracks south of I-70 through the day, it will transition to rain, as temperatures will be climbing through the day. Expect mostly an all rain event for all counties, excluding the winter weather advisory counties. Accumulations should be less than .05″. Temperatures will be rising through the day nearing 35 by evening, with breezy southeast winds under 16 mph.

TONIGHT: Most of the rain should taper off by late this evening, however there could still be some spotty showers east of highway 63. Temperatures this evening will rise through most of the night, as an approaching cold front tracks into Mid-Missouri. Expecting an all rain event, until morning when temperatures should start to rapidly drop below freezing. We’ll likely see a winter mix (freezing rain, sleet, and drizzle), until it fully changes over to snow. Winds remain breezy through the night under 15 mph.

EXTENDED: This weekend will be one of the coldest weekends in over 2 years. After a brief high near 40 degrees around midnight Friday night, temperatures will rapidly decline. Snow is likely as we head into the afternoon hours Saturday, with accumulations near 1 inch along and west of 63/north of 70. South of 70 and east of 63 should be up to a half an inch of snow. Northwest winds of 15 mph will gust to 25 mph at times, producing bitterly cold wind chills near 0 by evening. By Sunday morning a northwest breeze and dry air takes hold as high pressure starts to return and sunshine, along with frigid temperatures with highs in the upper teens, making it likely the coldest day so far. We’ll likely have wind chill values below 0 for much of Sunday, possibly reaching -10 to -20 in the morning. For additional weather updates follow @ABC17Stormtrack on Twitter.
