Tracking a system that may bring travel headaches on New Year’s Day

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy skies remain this evening as some of the cloud cover from today tries to break apart. Temperatures drop into the middle 30's.

FRIDAY: Our next system approaches Friday, and we warm up big ahead of it. Partly cloudy skies and south winds jump temperatures into the high 50's. Some may even see low 60's to the south. Late Friday, showers will start to develop south before lifting northward where they will meet quickly falling temperatures.

EXTENDED: Temperatures will start to transition rain to a wintry mix and snow by Saturday morning, likely leading to troubles on the roadways. Rain will likely initially transition to either freezing rain or sleet. It is certainly possible that we do see a slim window that could lead to some icing before sleet or snow begin to fall. As temperatures continue to fall, snow will become the primary precipitation type by the afternoon. Eventually it’ll come to an end Saturday night as temperatures bottom out in the single digits. With a wind sticking around, wind chills will be below zero creating dangerous conditions to be outdoors. We’re stuck in the cold Sunday with highs in the 20’s before climbing out of it to start next week. Temperatures will top out in the 40’s Monday and Tuesday.
