Missouri DOC director may soon resign

Multiple sources are reporting that the director of the Missouri Department of Corrections announced his impending resignation, though that’s being denied by a department spokesman.

Reports by the Kansas City Star and The Blaze said George Lombardi, the department’s director since 2009, sent and email to DOC employees Thursday morning.

“It is with heavy heart that I share with you my decision to retire/resign my position as Director. I do so however with the knowledge that you and I together have evolved this department into a national model that is respected throughout the country. I believe that the initiatives we have put in place over the years have made a difference in our offenders, both in prisons and on the street, It is you who have made this happen and I hope you take great pride in your accomplishment.

I now walk away with as much dignity as I can muster and with the advice to each and every one of your to stand tall and have great pride in all you do each and every day.”

DOC spokesperson David Owen would not comment on the letter or it’s contents.

“The director has not resigned,” Owens said. “He continues to serve as the director of the Missouri Department of Corrections. He will continue to serve as the director until the end of the current administration.”
