Last Supermoon of the Year

Clouds will be clearing this afternoon, and it looks to be mostly clear for much of Mid Missouri tonight to view the last Supermoon of the year. Here are some fun facts about tonight ‘s supermoon, aka the Cold Moon. 1. This is the only night of the month, where the moon will shine all night long. The rest of the month, the moon will occur at some point during the day. Because yesterday , Monday the 12th, it was in Perigee (closest point to earth), it appears bigger and brighter then normal full moons. This is the last of the trifecta Supermoons this year of occurring on October 15 , November 14 , and finally December 13 .

2. During the winter months in the northern hemisphere, earth is actually closer to the sun (weird I know), and the gravitational pull is then greater on the moon, giving the appearance that the Winter Supermoon is bigger then summer Supermoons.

3. It rises tonight at approximately 5:01PM, peaks at 6:05PM, and sets appr 6:35AM Wednesday morning. Those north of I-70 will have the best viewing conditions. For additional weather updates follow @ABC17Stormtrack on Twitter.
