Officers shoot man while responding to possible hostage situation in Audrain County

UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirms a man was shot by at least one trooper and one Audrain County sheriff’s deputy.

Sgt. Scott White told ABC 17 News the Highway Patrol troopers and Audrain County deputies responded to a possible hostage situation late Thursday night in Farber.

White said the suspect was holding a shotgun and moving toward the officers. He said the suspect was not following the officers’ commands, forcing them to shoot.

White could not confirm how many officers shot or how many times the man was hit. He did confirm it was more than once.

White told ABC 17 News after the officers fired their weapons, they went to their patrol cars for first aid kits to begin treatment until EMS arrived.

The man was taken to University Hospital in Columbia for treatment of his injuries. White said at last check, the man was conscious and talking with officials.

ABC 17 News spoke with residents in the community where the shooting happened. Most residents told us it was a quiet area with little crime. They said the shooting was very surprising.

One woman woke up to the gunfire coming through her wall. She said bullets went across her kitchen and living room. She showed us the damage, which included broken floorboards and a damaged dresser.

White said once the Highway Patrol is finished with its investigation, the information will be handed to prosecutors, at which point the name of the suspect and details of what led to the original 911 call will be released.

The last time MSHP had an officer-involved shooting was in June 2015 in Callaway County.

UPDATE 9:20 a.m.: The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirms officers shot a man overnight while responding to a possible hostage situation in Audrain County.

Troopers say it happened around 11:45 Thursday night at an apartment complex in the area of Trabue Drive.

Troopers say a preliminary investigation revealed that officers made contact with man inside an apartment who was armed with a shotgun.

They say the man then moved toward the officers with the gun and didn’t obey their commands.

The officers then apparently fired at the man and he suffered gunshot wounds.

Troopers say the man was flown to University Hospital in Columbia for his injuries. They say no one else was hurt.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office are investigating this incident.

UPDATE 8:06 a.m.: The Missouri State Highway Patrol has confirmed a shooting happened overnight in Farber, Mo.

Sgt. Scott White says he’s working on a news release on the incident right now. ABC 17 News is expecting more information about the shooting within the next few hours.

Early Friday morning a viewer called ABC 17 News to say there was a possible officer-involved shooting in Audrain County.

Our ABC 17 News crews called the Audrain County Sheriffs Department for more information. The department was aware of a shooting in the county, but told ABC 17 News the Missouri State Highway Patrol was handling media inquires about it.

ABC 17 News has reached out to the Highway Patrol for more information, but so far has not heard back.

ABC 17 News is working to find out if officers were involved in the possible shooting, what led up to it, and if anyone was hurt.
